Dealing with my outdated housing policy! How would I go about revising the document?
A housing policy should reflect the community's needs for growth and progress. First get approval from Council to proceed with this task. Gather your Housing Committee, portfolio councillors and even some community members together and have a focus group session where you can outline what the current policy issues are and create a work plan to carry out the project of revising the policy. Depending on the size of your community and housing portfolio (number of rental units) your work plan could be anywhere from 6 months to three years!
Have the Chief and Council approve the work plan and if you require professional services for this work, obtain some price quotes from Housing Consultants or your Tribal Council, and submit to Council for approval as well.
There are many factors such as legal, technical, health issues, that you will need to use when formulating the policy changes when creating or revising a policy. Good Luck !
